Lash Extensions 101 // My Experience with Lash Extensions + Giveaway

Lash Extensions 101, What to know about lash extensions

Hello Beauty Babes! Welcome to Monday!

Lately I’ve been getting a ton of questions from people I interact with on a daily basis as well as a few DM’s on instagram about my lashes, specifically my lash extensions. I’m taking this post in a different direction today and giving you guys an Q&A on my experience with lash extensions.

Don’t worry – I’m not holding back. I’m giving you guys the good, the bad, and the ugly. I plan to answer all the most commonly asked questions that you may have about lash extensions.

Psst.. I’m doing a giveaway at the end of this post so be sure to check it out!!

So let’s get started….

DO YOU LIKE THEM? WHAT’S WAS YOUR OVERALL EXPERIENCE WITH LASH EXTENSIONS?

The short answer: YES! I love them.

The long answer: I really do love them; way more than I thought I would. I was surprised at just how much I love them, to be honest. Not only did lash extensions cut down my makeup routine from 30 minutes in the morning to basically 3 minutes; I stopped wearing eye makeup and just put on sunscreen and foundation in the morning, but they also made me feel more confident during the day.

WHERE DID YOU GET THEM DONE?

First off, I’m going to tell you to do your research and get recommendations from your friends/family/anyone you trust before you make an appointment to get your lash extensions done. When I was researching salons/technicians in the Chicago area that were trained in lash extensions, I found a mix bag of information. You have to protect your eyes, so always make sure you visit someone who is trained and certified in lash extensions.

With that being said, I love love love Jin of Lash Lounge by Jin – she came recommended to me by Shai of Drunk on Shoes so I knew she had to be legit.

As I was a little worried about the process in general, Jin was awesome at walking me through all the steps and getting comfortable with the process.

CAN YOU FEEL THEM? DO YOU EYELIDS DROOP A LITTLE BECAUSE THEY ARE HEAVY?

I ended up getting a mix of classic and volume mink lashes my first round and to be honest with all of you – yes, I felt them for at least the first week but they did not make my eyelid droop. I got mink lash extensions and they are light as a feather. After that that first week of getting use to the post-care, I barely felt them and a lot of the times I forgot I had them on unless someone specifically asked me about them.

I’m highly sensitive to added “weight” on my body in general so whenever I wore falsies or even when I wear my hair extensions, I feel them, so my experience may not be like yours.

WHAT ARE THEY MADE OF?

As I mentioned above, lash extensions come in a variety of options – synthetic, mink, faux mink, sable, and silk.

Jin only works with mink so that was my only option however based on all my research, mink is the way you want to go for the longest lasting and most natural looking lash extensions. With that being said, they are the most expensive option of the bunch.

HOW MUCH DO THEY COST? IS IT CRAZY EXPENSIVE?

So there is a lot of variety in terms of pricing because of the many different types of lash extensions that you can get. The price will fluctuate based on the following criteria:

The Style: Classic or Volume
The Lash: synthetic, mink, faux mink, sable or silk lashes
Technician: Self Employed vs Salon Employed

Based on my research, lash extensions can cost anywhere from $100 – $500 for the initial full set and then anywhere from $50 – $150 per “fill in” after that.

To be honest, it’s not a cheap beauty routine and only you know how comfortable you are on spending money on such things. For me, it’s a bit pricey so as much as I love lash extensions, I only see myself getting them for special occasions and not for everyday wear.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO GET THEM PUT ON?

It takes about 2 hours to put on the initial set of lash extensions and about an hour each time you go in for a fill in. You do have to keep your eyes completely shut the whole time so it’s a nice way to get a nap in.**

** I actually fell asleep about 5 minutes into my first appointment; I had been so tired after a grueling week at work that I barely remember anything from the process.

HOW LONG DO THEY LAST?

So I got my initial set of lash extensions at the beginning of May and went in for my first “fill in” after two weeks. This was a bit sooner than recommended but we were timing my fill with my trip to Los Angeles.

It’s recommended that you get a fill in every 3 weeks and I would say that was my experience. In general, they say that lash extensions can last anywhere from 4-6 weeks.

ARE YOU WORRIED THAT YOUR NATURAL LASHES ARE DAMAGED?

In full transparency, yes I was worried that after I got the lashes taken off I would essentially have nothing left to work with. However, that simply wasn’t the case. I took my lashes off this past weekend (more on that below) and everything looks good on my end.

I think this personally speaks to the fact that when you see a professional who puts them on correctly, there is little to no damage to your natural lashes. Based on everything I heard, I knew Jin was a professional and therefore I my concerns were eased after our first appointment.

DO YOU STILL WEAR MASCARA?

Nope, as I mentioned above I cut out my entire eye makeup routine. I just didn’t feel like I needed anything at all during the day, the lashes did all of the work.

With that being said, the night we went out in Los Angeles to actually celebrate my birthday I did wear a ton of makeup and played up a smokey eye. I did have to be careful not to pull on the lashes but it all looked fabulous. I felt very Kim K-esque that night.

HOW DID YOU TAKE THEM OFF?

Okay, I’m going to start off by just telling you to get them professionally removed by your lash technician. DO NOT DO IT YOURSELF! It’s a much simpler process than trying to take them off yourself.

With that being said, I did take off my lash extensions myself this weekend and used a mixture of steam and oil to gently remove the lash extensions. It was quite a process and took forever, but I feel good about the fact that I didn’t eff up my natural lashes too much. At least here is hoping….

I’ve been conditioning them with jojoba oil since I removed them to bring back that natural oil.

WHAT DIDN’T YOU LIKE ABOUT THEM?

Just like anything else in life, there are good things and bad things about every situation. As I mentioned above, I just removed my lash extensions and there are a few things that I feel I need to transparent about – getting real here.

  1. Commitment – lash extensions are quite a commitment and getting them filled in every 3 weeks just wasn’t working out with my hectic work schedule at the moment. I knew they were starting to look a bit sparse and that was stressing me out since I knew I didn’t have enough time in my schedule this month to get my fill in.
  2. Wrinkles – Lash extensions come with a set of rules and the #1 rule is to not rub your eyes. I never realized how much I rub my eyes throughout the day until I couldn’t. As a result, I found myself tugging at my delicate under eye skin A LOT of the course of the month. As much as I tried to break this bad habit, I finally accepted that just like I’m never going to be a back sleeper, I’m never not going to rub my eyes.
  3. Cost –  While i knew I could afford it to keep up with the maintenance of my lash extensions, I decided not to for the sake of putting away a few extra dollars in the bank. I’m currently saving up as much money as possible for a big purchase and every little tweak and change I make to my budget allows to be one step closer to that goal. #adultingsohard

So there you guys go – every question that I’ve been asked over the past month about my lash extensions. Hopefully this information was helpful and if you have any additional questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me!
